The Personal History of David Copperfield is a 2019 film adaptation of an 1850 novel by Charles Dickens. The film is awash with Victorian-era scenery and is a delight to watch. It takes you back to the 19th century at a time when the world was becoming itself. In an era where capitalism was encroaching London but also flourishing it. It is set in England where the director allows the main character, Dev Patel, who plays David Copperfield, to watch his own birth. It is set as a personal narration of his life with Copperfield taking the center stage in a theater to give the story.

The film plays a critical role in marking out inequality in society at the time and tackles critical topics such as poverty, debt, and homelessness. The film allows the audience to immerse themselves in the shoes of a struggling David Copperfield who at one time is forced to share a little apartment with nearly ten people. David Copperfield is sent away by his stepfather, Mr. Murdstone to work in a bottling factory where he is paid next to nothing, as a little child. On leaving the countryside, Copperfield is sent to live with Mr. Micawber who is deep in debt. The film shows the cunning and trickery of Mr. Micawber who is heavily followed by creditors who are in hot pursuit of what he owes them. The film is also a delight for the eyes due to its stunning photography.

David Copperfield later in life acquires some wealth and lives a good life in London enjoying himself with friends. He falls in love with his boss’ daughter who he later realizes is not his true love. He is, however, upended when his aunt, Betsey Trotwood, is thrown out of her house as her investments plummet. His aunt lives with a man named Mr. Dick who suffers an unusual mental condition where he believes that the memories of the late King Charles have taken over his brain. Mr. Dick adds a kind of genius madness to the film making it that more interesting. Aunt Betsey later realizes that her investments had been embezzled by Uriah, a servant who takes over the firm of his drunken boss Steerforth. Uriah Heep is an unlikely character who acts as a shadow and pest.

The film is a must-watch and anyone eager to be fascinated by the work of Charles Dickens will love The Personal History of David Copperfield. It is set to be released on Netflix and has already been released in some parts of the world. The film is currently in theaters and is a must-watch for anyone seeking adventure and a good story. The film ends with scenes of a successful David Copperfield whose writing brings great fortune; so much that he can buy back his aunt’s house. The story also relays drama as Copperfield is very fond of his nanny Miss Peggoty who adds a kind of home feel to the film. Peggoty’s family is upended when their niece Emily runs off with David’s friend, who later abandons her.
